Science Café Wageningen is an initiative of Wageningen UR employees and students:

Dolf Weijers (associate professor Biochemistry)

Pim Zabel (former associate professor Molecular Biology)

Gaby van Caulil (editor in chief Resource)

“I have always been interested in stories about fine but often complex science. This led me to pursuieng a job as a science journalist. I have worked for Bionieuws, newspaper De Volkskrant and public broadcasters VARA and VPRO. Since 2008, I have been the editor-in-chief of Resource. It surprised me that Wageningen didn’t have a Science Café. I am pleased we have put that right!”

Simon Vink (spokesman Executive Board)

Paul den Besten (director of KLV Wageningen Alumni Network)

Boudewijn Pieters (student Marine Resource Management)

“Critical understanding of my field of study has proved to be a recurring theme in my work and the conversations I engage in. The critical assessment of scientific methods, philosophies and developments, the societal relevance of science and the intervention of science in society and individuals’ lives have always been at the center of my interest. Following a BSc. in Liberal Arts & Sciences at the Roosevelt Academy, I found my way to Wageningen University and eventually Science Café Wageningen, where I am responsible for PR, participate in discussions and may occasionally contribute with awesome ideas.”

Siri Pisters (student Nutrition & health)

Nico Claassens (student Biotechnology)

“The relation between science and society keeps on interesting me, both are very relevant for my fields of study: biotechnology and environmental sciences. I am currently working as a PhD student at the Laboratory of Microbiology on a synthetic biology project. Within the team, I coordinate the PR and contribute by identifying new ‘hot’ topics for our Science Cafe.”

Pola Verschoor (student Nutrition and Health)

“To me, the best part of Science Cafe Wageningen is the plenary discussion. A Science Cafe evening starts with two stories from two different scientists. Two angles within one field of science, creating an atmosphere of open discussion. The talks and discussions make you think: food for thought. The subjects I am most interested in include the influences on human health, which ranges from psychology (brain) to disease on cell- and DNA level. I am a Nutrition and Health Master-student. I am fascinated by the influence of nutrition on genes, so my specialisation is Nutrigenomics & Genetics. Within the SCW-team, I contribute to the PR.”

These are our former board members:

Rio Pals (development professional and alumnus)

Ruben Wester (student International Development Studies)

Kees van der Ark (student Biotechnology and intern at MSD Nijmegen)
